Though joining the "Geriatric Gang" has it's downside, Dad always enjoyed being everyone's grandpa.
Whether going to a craft show, church or a big night out with Mom to McDonald's, as often as not he had a little car or animal, train set or something to generate a chuckle (or groan) in his pocket. So armed, he often took a break between the main entree & ice cream to introduce himself to a young family, especially those with small children who would rather be somewhere else.
With parental permission, the little ones were soon preoccupied with their new toy (most likely with google eyes hot-glued onto it, whether an animal or car). Parents enjoying a more contented finale of their meal gratefully accepted his business card (containing both contact information & encouraging scriptures). Those who looked him up again came away with many other things--bird houses, squirrel feeders, corner knick-knack shelves... and even an occasional "Perryphrase." On his business card: "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13
All of this from what was often scrap, recycled or donated materials.
